In August 2006 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 47, had two children aged 10 and 16 and had always kept myself fit and healthy.

I was aware of the need to regularly check my breasts but it wasn't something I did on a regular basis. I discovered the lump whilst showering and wasn't unduly concerned - it was just under my collar bone so I thought it was a cyst. My doctor agreed with me but referred me to the breast clinic to be sure and three months later I had an appointment at Tameside Hospital.

I was at the hospital all day undergoing various tests and a week and half later I received the news. After that everything moved quickly and two weeks after the diagnosis I was in hospital having surgery. I went through six months of chemotherapy, followed by three weeks of radiotherapy and then a further 12 months taking the drug Herceptin. In all, I endured two years of treatment and I still take regular medication.

I don't know how I would have got through it without the love and support of my family and dear friends who stood by me every step of the way. I can't fault the care I received whilst in hospital and the help and re-assurance given by the breast care nurses. Everybody at work was also extremely supportive.

If I have one thing that I would like to pass on to all women it's this:

Always make time to regularly check your breasts, always go to your doctor if you find anything that is unusual for you and if you have any doubts at all make sure you persist, even asking for a second opinion if necessary.
